Follow in Michael Palin's footsteps to the heart of Borneo
Borneo, the world's 3rd largest island, is an enigmatic land with unique flora and fauna like the orang utan or the biggest flower in the world, the raffalesia. It is shrowded in legends of head-hunting tribes, pirates and the White Rajahs of Sarawak.
Our adventure starts and finishes in the charming Capital of the Malaysian State of Sarawak, Kuching, where Chinese, Malays and tribal groups mix harmoniously. Then we head up-river into the heartland of the Iban tribe, learn about their way of life, and explore the surrounding jungle and forest.
Significantly the Iban have a number of legends about orang utans, one being that an adult female saved a human baby, another that they are in some way ancestors or ghosts. Either way the Iban have a taboo against killing orang utans, so this is one of the few areas in the world where they still exist in the wild and a number of conservation groups are working with the Iban to keep it that way. Your visit will contribute to the survival of this nearly extinct ape.

Day 6 - FREE DAY IN kUCHING
There is much to do in and around Kuching. Don't be surprised if you see statues of cats everywhere. "Kuching" literally means "cat", though the name almost certainly comes from the fruit typical of the area, "mata kuching", or "cats' eyes", a bit like a lychee. There is even a cat museum! You might enjoy just browsing the main bazaar and a visit to the Sarawak Museum, in its day said to be the best in South East Asia. Take a trip across or along the Sarawak river by sampan. If the tides are right a trip to Bako National Park can be very rewarding. On a peninsular close to town wildlife is readily seen. Or perhaps a trip to see the orang utans at Semangoh. Our guides will be able to advise you.
