Located in the Shanxi province, Datong is famous for its charcoal industry but this is not the reason why you'd make the trip to this city.
You will come for the famous Yungang grottoes where you'll discover the buddhist art of this exceptionnal site. Visit also the Xuankong hanging monastery fonded in VI century which takes his name from the view it gives you from downwards.
Also on your agenda, the Mount Hengshan and the Wooden pagoda.
From 386 to 534 AD, the city (then named Pingcheng) had its golden age as the capital city of the Tuoba: a nomadic Turkic-speaking people from Mongolia, who converted to Buddhism and left in Datong a legacy of more than 50,000 Buddhist carvings.
During the 12th Century, the Ming took back northern China, and renamed the city Datong.
The city was sacked and destroyed several times throughout history, but rebuilt every time, and is still considered a renowned area for spiritual activity, Buddhism amongst others.
